Health and Wealth

Many people are not strangers to the challenges of health and wealth. People often struggle in one or both of these categories.

How Health and Wealth Compare

When it comes to health, oftentimes we know what we should or should not be doing. We know that we should be eating a healthy balanced diet and staying physically active. We know that we should not be eating lots of fast foods, processed foods and that we should not be inactive.
When you think of it that way it's quite simple.
Health = Eat Right and Exercise
Yet, so many of us struggle with it. Why is that?
The same is true when it comes to dealing with finances. We know what we should or should not be doing. We know that we should live within, if not below, our means, that we should save more and spend less. We know that we should not be overspending, spending wastefully, and we should not be increasing our debt.
So just like health, when it comes to money, the concept is simple.
Wealth = Spend Less, Save & Invest More
Yet, many of us struggle with this. The question again is why?
The world is full of temptation, whether that's a temptation to eat unhealthy food or a temptation to buy unnecessary items. It's really about gaining control of your urges and resisting temptations. Knowing when to say "no, that's not for me" is so valuable. Self-control is needed when it comes to both health and wealth. We have to do more of the things we know to be right and less of the other things that get us in trouble.

Health

As I was recently beginning my weight-loss journey, I realized that similar to how someone would have extra debt, I had put on some extra weight. Did I know why? I could only blame it on making poor food choices (repeatedly) and lack of physical activity. Unhappy about my actions and lack of restraint, I realized it was time to take back control. To lose weight, I knew that I needed to start putting the right foods in my body, being more physically active and burning calories.  While not always simple, the point is I knew what I should have been doing, but was not. Now in order to reach my goals, I must put my knowledge to work. That means eating more fruits and vegetables and staying away from fattening high-calorie foods. It also means that I need to make physical activity a part of my life, throughout the week.

Wealth

Similarly, when it comes to money, you typically know what you should be doing or not doing. While money and expenses can be complicated, on a basic level, we know that the less we spend, the more we have to save and invest. Some purchases we make are unnecessary and only add to our debt. Maybe we should be contributing more to our 401K. Whatever the case, you usually know where you fall short. As we build on our basic knowledge about finances and wealth, it's important to take proper action and do the right thing. Make sure your actions are putting you in a place of power and not dragging you down. That means, making personal finance a part of life. That means making time to review your budget, monitoring your spending, and making sure you really know what's flowing in and out. It's your money and unless you take control, it will take control of you.

Summary

Two of the most stressful areas most people deal with is health and wealth. If we just rely on basic principles, these areas do not have to be a source of stress in our lives. Realizing that both our health and our wealth (or potential wealth) need constant attention, monitoring and managing is the first step. Sometimes things outside of our control can come into play in both areas, and that's okay. Nevertheless, there are small things we could be doing daily to improve our health and increase our wealth.
Take care of your health and your wealth and it'll take care of you!
