Learning To Spend

Hello there! Although the title of this post may be unconventional, let's discuss the topic of spending. For some, spending may come naturally, while saving can be challenging. However, in my case, I save excessively, finding it difficult to spend money at times. Making large purchases, even ones that may be considered small, is often a struggle for me. I would spend considerable time researching ways to save and even delay purchases. For instance, I recall wanting a Yoga/Pilates game for my Wii, but I felt it was too expensive, so I refused to buy it. It wasn't until years later, when someone gifted it to me, that I finally got to enjoy it. I know, I know, a bit shameful, right? 😆

The point of my story is that I've recognized the need to change my ways. I'm learning to spend guilt-free and not agonize over every purchase. It took me a while to get to this point, but it doesn't have to be the same for other savers.

Teaching Myself to Spend

I took a step back to evaluate my spending habits and discovered that I track all my monthly expenses. I categorize them into general expenses such as food, housing, utilities, transportation, household, etc., and also for entertainment, clothing, fun, travel, gifts, etc. After careful analysis, I realized that while household expenses were always budgeted and paid for, my personal and recreational spending was often neglected. Why? It was allocated, so why wasn't I using it? 🤔

Reminders to Self

I reminded myself that I had budgeted for entertainment, clothing, and miscellaneous expenses and that spending was fine. Recognizing this, I now spend more on what I enjoy without feeling guilty. 🎉

In summary, I'm doing the right things; I prioritize my expenses, save over 25% between investment accounts, retirement accounts, and 401k, and contribute to and utilize employer benefits. With all that in mind, with leftover funds, I can choose to save, spend, or give. The hard part is over, and whatever I do beyond that is acceptable. 💰

To all the savers out there, it's great to save, but spending is also okay! It's essential to prioritize wisely, invest in your future first, take care of your responsibilities, and then enjoy the benefits of your hard work. You deserve to reap the rewards of your efforts and enjoy life to the fullest. So, give every dollar a job, and then let yourself be free! 💪
